No matter who you are, or where you are
on life's journey, you're welcome here.
Membership in the Congregational Church of La Jolla (United Church of Christ) is open to all who have been given the gift of faith that God was in Christ reconciling the world to God's self (2 Cor. 5:19). Beyond our congregational covenant, we do not require agreement with a particular creed, confession, or statement of faith as a test for church membership.
Technically speaking, there are two kinds of membership in our church. Most join as full members, which means that they belong to no other congregation. Those who have not previously joined a Christian church may join on profession of faith. Others may transfer their membership from another congregation - UCC or non-UCC.
Seasonal residents of La Jolla, or those who for personal reasons do not wish to cut ties with a previous church, are welcomed as associate members. Full and associate members share the same responsibilities, are eligible to serve as officers or on boards and committees, and have full voting rights at congregational meetings.
Welcoming new members generally occurs during a worship service. Those who transfer from another church or who join as associate members are simply asked if they will participate in the life of our congregation through their prayers, presence, gifts, and service. Those joining on profession of faith are also asked if they affirm faith in Jesus Christ.

Before their profession of faith, youth generally participate in a series of classes preparing them for church membership through a study of the Christian faith, the Christian tradition, respect for other faiths, and the meaning of a life of service. After this course of study, young persons who feel the call to join the church are welcomed into membership in a service of confirmation.
