FEBRUARY 1
Bible Study at 1:30 PM on Wednesday will cover Mark 14:10-72. This study meets at the church, and all are welcome to attend. Please note that we will finish studying Mark on February 15, and on Ash Wednesday, February 22, we will begin a new study called 40x7: Trouble & Grace. If you're not currently attending Bible Study but would like to test the waters with a more short-term commitment to one, this is an excellent opportunity to experience a 7-week study. See below for more details.FEBRUARY 2
CWA will meet at 10 am (note time change) for a guided tour of the Map Museum (7825 Fay). After the tour, the women will re-gather at the church for lunch. Katheryn's in charge of devotions, Kim's bringing the salad & Betty's doing the dessert. Everybody else is asked to bring a sandwich to be sliced and shared.
FEBRUARY 5: Covenant Renewal
On February 5, we will not only be observing the Lord's Supper, but we will also be renewing our church covenant. I hope that everybody is there to take part in this simple but meaningful ritual. Here are the words to our CCLJ covenant:
We covenant with God and with one another, promising to join together in worship and the celebration of the sacraments, in the study of the scriptures, in sharing the good news with one another and the world around us, in joining in the struggle for justice for the whole human family, and in welcoming into our midst all who seek God and community, that the love of God, the grace of Jesus Christ, and the communion of the Holy Spirit may be known and acknowledged in the life of our congregation.
The main Bible passage will be the 5th day of creation as described in Genesis 1:20-23. Our hymns will include the old standards Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above and This Is My Father's World, as well as one we haven't sung before: It's a metrical setting of Psalm 84 entitled How Lovely, Lord, How Lovely, and the tune is called Merle's Tune. You'll love it. In the sermon we'll learn about a recent blessing on Angela's Garden (on the east side of the Social Hall).
FEBRUARY 18
On Saturday, February 18, we have a block of tickets for the play American Night showing at the La Jolla Playhouse at 2 PM, followed by a panel discussion. The cost is $37 per ticket. Here's a brief description of the play: "As Juan José feverishly studies for his U.S. citizenship exam, he becomes ensnared in a tumultuous, whirlwind journey through pivotal moments in American history."
FEBRUARY 19
Last year's Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of churches (Southern California Nevada Conference of the UCC) was held in our church. This year, it's being held at the Paradise Hills UCC, 5810 Alleghany Street, San Diego. All UCC members are encouraged to attend these meetings at which reports are heard, a budget is adopted, and officers elected. The program this year will be the Lincoln High School Gospel Choir, so it will be not only informative but also highly entertaining.
