About United Church of Christ

La Jolla Congregational Church
Greetings to Our Web Visitors!

On behalf of the Congregational Church of La Jolla (United Church of Christ), I welcome you to our website. From reading these pages, you might come away with the impression that we are a congregation which encourages intellectual inquiry and which values simple dignity in worship. If so, then you are probably correct. What you cannot appreciate from a website, however, are the sense of the sacred you will experience in our sanctuary, and the genuine warmth of our community. Whether you live in the San Diego area or are here for just a short while, you are cordially invited to visit us in downtown La Jolla at the corner of Cave and Ivanhoe.

This congregation is not, nor does it try to imitate, a megachurch. You won't find here a band or overhead projectors. We sing hymns, not praise choruses. We view the Bible as a collection of sacred texts too important to take literally. The weekly sermon is carefully researched, and does not attempt to repeat platitudes with which everyone already agrees. Church members eagerly greet one another before and after the service, and warmly welcome visitors - not because it's part of a packaged church-growth program, but because it's part of who we are.

If a small, friendly congregation (we average about 70 in the Sunday service) with an open mind and traditional worship with beautiful music is what you find meaningful, we think we might be just what you've been searching for. Please join us at 10:30 A.M. any Sunday morning. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or our office manager, Mrs. Chérie McGruer, any time. We look forward to welcoming you to our church.
